Lake View Cemetery History
Founded in 1869 and modeled on the great garden cemeteries of Victorian England and France, the Lake View Cemetery Association is a 285-acre peaceful urban oasis that integrates landscapes with memorial sculptures and architecture. Located in the surrounding neighborhoods of Cleveland, East Cleveland, and Cleveland Heights, Lake View Cemetery is a well-loved public treasure.
More than 109,000 individuals are buried at Lake View, including luminaries from Cleveland's historic past such as President Jame A Garfield; business magnate and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller; Secretary of State John Hay; US Senator Marcus Hanna; US Representative Frances Payne Bolton; Cleveland Mayor Carl Stokes; inventor Garrett Morgan; and crime-stopper Eliot Ness.
